Our Team

Dave Maness

Founder & Principal

Highly specialized consultant and successful medical device executive serving three of the largest U.S. medical device companies for over twenty five years. Dave’s career covers a wide range of services within the medical arena to include sales management, sales development, training, market development, regulatory, product design, clinical trials, patents (IP), sourcing and manufacturing. He specialized in working with Key Opinion Leaders covering general surgery, cardiovascular and peripheral vascular specialties, pharmacy, hospital leadership, health systems (GPSs, IDNs) and university teaching hospitals.

As medical consultant, combined with a previous career in industrial design and manufacturing Mr. Maness provides a diverse background ideal for a wide range of devices and markets. His award-winning medical device career started with US Surgical Corp. in the early nineties, followed by Boston Scientific Corporation for sixteen years in sales and sales management. Afterwards he created the Cactus Smart Sink technologies which he sold to Stryker in 2017, where he continued serving as consultant providing his expertise to the Stryker Surgical Technologies division.

As Founder and CEO of Cactus, LLC, Charleston, SC, in 2010, he developed and patented the Cactus Smart Sink System, an innovative, go green technology for proper and safe disposal of dispensed and unused controlled substances (Narcotic) waste. (Now a Stryker Surgical Technologies product).

Today the Cactus Smart Sink technology is nationally recognized as “Best Practices” in the diverse health care market and deployed in medical facilities throughout the US. He worked with and provided comments to EPA and DEA to support new Rule-making (regulatory requirements) related to the tracking and disposal of unused Controlled Substances.

He has presented to the USC School of Engineering, multiple University Pharmacy Schools and served as adjunct Professor, MUSC School of Pharmacy. With Cactus, LLC he developed a fourth-year pharmacy student rotation program for proper categorization and management of Controlled Substance Waste and drug diversion prevention.

Prior to his medical career Mr. Maness gained valuable experience in industrial manufacturing and design. His industrial career also includes five years of experience in Industrial Non-Destructive Testing & Inspections (NDT) to the nuclear, naval ships and chemical markets providing expertise in radiography, ultrasound, magnetic particle and visual inspections.

Gary Baldwin

Co-founder & Principal

Gary is a results oriented leader with a strong track record including multiple successful startup exits and responsibility for organizations delivering annual revenues in excess of $500M. Success in leading, both in Fortune 50 companies and small startups, has shaped Gary’s leadership style. This can be summarized as “relentlessly finishing great products and delivering them at scale to satisfy customer’s needs”.

During his career, Gary has launched several new products and has achieved significant revenue growth and improved profitability of existing products. Several of these products had market defining patent awarded intellectual property (IP) that changed core aspects of networking and communications.

Gary has led teams at Cisco, Cerent, Raytheon, Zipit Wireless, Dynepic, and ECI Telecom. Products and services from these companies span markets including internet, healthcare, and consumer applications in critical uses such as core internet infrastructure, first responder products, and military applications.

Gary has a MS EE and a BS ChE from George Washington and Clemson respectively. He is active in the Red Cross, serving as a regional board chair. He is a past member of Clemson University President’s Advisory board and the George Washington University School of Engineering Advisory Board.

Scott Heuler

Principal

Scott Heuler joins Medical Access with over 25 years in sales management, marketing and senior leadership positions in the medical device industry. His background includes regional, and national senior sales leadership positions with NeuroOne Technologies Corporation in Diagnostic Epilepsy, Boston Scientific Corporation in Interventional Cardiology, Structural Heart, Cardiac Rhythm Management and Peripheral Vascular. Prior to this, Mr. Heuler held various senior sales and marketing roles with Guidant Corporation and U.S. Surgical Corporation. He is currently President and CEO of SH Consulting Services, LLC specializing in the Neurological disorders space in the areas of Epilepsy, Depression, Brain Mapping, Electrode Stimulation, and Deep Brain Stimulation. With his extensive and diverse background Mr. Heuler is considered one of the top thought-leaders in the medical device industry.

 

Thomas Mather, MD

Principal

Dr. Mather has over 35 years experience as an Oculoplastic surgeon. He graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine as an E.B. Rinker scholar, completed his Ophthalmology residency at Medical University of South Carolina, and his fellowship in Oculoplastic surgery at University of Arizona. He furthered his executive studies at Wharton School of Business. He is a board certified Ophthalmologist, a life fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a fellow in the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (ASOPRS).

In 2004, Dr. Mather co-founded Physicians Eye Surgery Center in Charleston, SC, which was acquired by U.S. Eye in 2020. Dr. Mather has been involved in several start up companies including Encore Pharmaceuticals, which provided a novel treatment of presbyopia, and was successfully purchased by Novartis (UNR 844) in 2017, Allysta Pharmaceuticals, a clinical stage company with significant advancements in both dry eye and NASH, where he currently serves as a clinical advisor, Premark, a late stage Swiss company engaged in the treatment of blepharitis, where he serves as clinical advisor and BlinkCNS, a ground breaking device for early diagnosis of CNS disease, where he is a scientific advisor.

Dr. Mather has gained world recognition as a triathlete and runner with a marathon PR of 2:21, a U.S. national triathlon championship, and a top 100 finish in the Ironman World Championship triathlon in Hawaii.
